The Pawtucket Red Sox offense became rejuvenated last night in Rochester, as they pounded out 12 hits in their 8-6 victory over the Red Wings.
Jeff Bailey, Joe Thurston, Chris Carter, Jonathan Van Every, and Gil Velazquez each had two hits for the PawSox. Newcomer Sandy Madera had one hit, a three run homer in the third. He drove in four in the game.
Bailey, Van Every, and Velazquez also drove in runs for Pawtucket. The other scored on a wild pitch.
PawSox starter David Pauley (2-1) pitched five innings, giving up only one run on six hits in picking up the win. He walked one and struck out three.
Edgar Martinez relieved Pauley in the sixth and gave up the other Rochester runs. The big blow came on a Darnell McDonald grand slam in the seventh. Jon Switzer and Lee Gronkiewicz pitched scoreless ball over the last 1 1/3 innings. Gronkiewicz earned his fifth save.
Rochester Starter Kevin Mulevy (2-2) had his worst start of the year, going 4 2/3 innings and giving up 7 earned runs. Casey Daigle surrendered the eighth PawSox run in relief.
LF Jason Pridie went 3 for 5 with three singles for Rochester. McDonald and 1B Randy Ruiz each had two hits.
The two teams play again tonight (6:35pm) at Frontier Field. LHP Michael Tejera (1-2, 4.57) goes for Pawtucket. LHP Brian Duensing (2-3, 2.40) takes the hill for Rochester.
