Welcome to May...Here's a look at the action across the International League yesterday...

Three Syracuse Chiefs drove in a pair of runs each as they finished a sweep of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 9-4. BOX

The Columbus Clippers have won three straight after their 6-4 win over Indianapolis yesterday. BOX

Mitch Talbot pitched 8 scoreless innings as the Durham Bulls shut out the Richmond Braves 2-0. Atlanta pitcher Mike Hampton also had another setback in that game. BOX

SS Paul Janish and OF Jay Bruce each had two hits as the Louisville Bats snapped the Toledo Mud Hens' 7 game winning streak, 4-3. BOX

Charlotte C Donny Lucy went 3 for 3 with a homer as the Knights defeated the Norfolk Tides 5-2. BOX

PawSox Take Rubber Game Over Red Wings, 4-2

The Pawtucket Red Sox combined timely hitting and strong pitching to defeat the Rochester Red Wings, 4-2, this afternoon in the final game of their three game set at Frontier Field.

The PawSox were able to open up a 4-0 lead on a Chad Spann sacrifice fly in the second, a two run homer by Jeff Bailey in the third, and a Keith Ginter double in the fifth. Ginter ended the game going 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles.

Knuckleballer Charlie Zink (3-1) once again was effective as the starter for Pawtucket. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on four hits. He walked two and struck out two to earn the win.

The Red Wings had a chance to score more than two runs in the sixth off Zink. With runners on second and third and one out and one run in, OF Jason Pridie made a poor base running decision in trying to score from third on a grounder back to Zink. 2B Howie Clark then drove in Rochester's second run with a single. Zink retired DH Randy Ruiz on a fly out to right to end the threat.

RHP Chris Smith came in to pitch the final three innings for Pawtucket to pick-up his first save of the season.

LHP Francisco Liriano (0-1) struggled again for the Red Wings, going 4 1/3 innings, giving up all four runs and taking the loss.

The PawSox head to Syracuse tomorrow night (7:00pm) to begin a four game series with the Chiefs. Davern Hansack (0-3) is slated to start for Pawtucket.

Game 27- PawSox vs. Red Wings, April 30, 2008

The PawSox hope to end the opening month of the season on a high note as they wrap up their three game series with the Rochester Red Wings this afternoon (12:05pm) in Rochester. RHP Charlie Zink (2-1, 3.09) takes the hill for Pawtucket against LHP Francisco Liriano (0-0, 6.75) for the Red Wings.

Here are some brief notes leading up to the game...

Pawtucket Red Sox (14-12)

Zink is coming off another solid outing, a no-decision April 24th against Syracuse. He pitched six innings, giving up only two runs on nine hits.

The PawSox bullpen is looking to rebound after giving up seven runs last night.

Jeff Bailey has been on a tear of late at the plate. he has a hit in 6 of his last 7 games and has raised his average to .292 after last night's 2 for 4 performance.

Rochester Red Wings (13-13)

Liriano will make his second start of the season for the Red Wings. The one-time Twins star lefty has been shaky in his three starts this season with the big club. He lost all three decisions with an ERA of 11.32. His lone Rochester start came on April 8th. He did not get the decision in the Red Wings' 6-5 win over Norfolk. He pitched 4 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits.

IF Randy Ruiz is working a seven game hitting streak. Over that time he is hitting .429 with 5 doubles, a triple, a homer, and 10 RBI's.

It's a safe bet that if you can get by the eighth inning unscathed with Rochester, you are in line for success. The Red Wings have out-scored opponents 24-2 in eighth inning so far this season, including 4 runs off the PawSox last night.

Here's a look at the rest of the action around the International League...

1B Brad Eldred hit a two-run walk off homer leading the Charlotte Knights to a 3-1 victory over the Norfolk Tides. BOX

The Scranton Wilkes/Barre Yankees scored six runs in ht second, and five players drove in runs as they dominated the Buffalo Bisons 10-6. BOX

CF Ryan Langerhans belted a homer and drove in five runs as the Columbus Clippers dominated the Indianapolis Indians 8-1. BOX

SS Reid Brignac and RF Justin Ruggiano each drove in a pair as the Durham Bulls shut out the Richmond Braves 4-0. BOX

The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs continue to find ways to lose, this time a 1-0 pitcher's duel to the Syracuse Chiefs. BOX

Toledo starter Eddie Bonine is now a perfect 5-0 as the Mud Hens beat the Louisville Bats 4-3. BOX

PawSox Relievers Fail to Hold Off Red Wings

The usually solid PawSox relief corps could not hold down the fort, giving up seven runs late as Pawtucket fell to the Rochester Red Wings, 9-3, last night at Frontier Field.

The PawSox were cruising along behind starter Michael Tejera, who left the game with one out in the sixth with a 3-2 lead. The Red Wings scored seven times in the seventh and eight off relievers Eric Hull, Craig Hansen, and Lincoln Holdzkom.

Throughout their barrage, the Red Wings only collected one extra base hit, a two run triple in the eighth by RF Darnell McDonald off Holdzkom. Rochester's three runs in the seventh scored on four singles and two sacrifice flies. Those runs were charged to Hull.

Hansen gave up his first three runs of the season in the eighth on a pair of singles sandwiched around a stolen base. Holdzkom's run also came on a single.

In the early goings of this game it looked like the PawSox were well in command. They scored all three runs in the first on a bases loaded wild pitch by Rochester starter Brian Duensing, a based loaded double play off the bat of Chris Carter, and a single by Keith Ginter. The PawSox scattered hits the rest of the way.

Tejera gave up two runs on six hits striking out five and walking two. Hull (1-2) took the loss in relief.

Duensing settled down after the shaky first, pitching six innings giving up seven hits and striking our four. Reliever Phil Humber (1-3) picked up the win, pitching a scoreless seventh.

The two teams wrap up their three game series this afternoon (12:05pm) as RHP Charlie Zink (2-1, 3.09) throws for Pawtucket against LHP Francisco Liriano (0-0, 6.75) for Rochester.

Game 26- PawSox vs. Red Wings, April 29, 2008

The PawSox look to make it two in a row on the road as they play game two of their three game series tonight (6:35pm) with the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field. The PawSox took game one, 8-6 last night. The PawSox will go with LHP Michael Tejera (1-2, 4.57) against LHP Brian Duensing (2-3, 2.40) for Rochester.

Here's a few tidbits to get you ready for the action...

Pawtucket Red Sox (14-11)

With last night's win the PawSox have assured themselves a winning April. The PawSox were 9-12 through April in 2007.

Tejera is coming off earning his first win of the season, pitching 6 innings and giving up only 1 run in the PawSox 3-1 win over Syracuse April 23rd.

Chris Carter enters the game with a four game hitting streak, through which he has batted .353 with two doubles and a triple.

Rochester Red Wings (12-13)

Deunsing is making his sixth start of the season tonight. He got his second win his last time out, an 8-2 Red Wings' victory over Lehigh Valley. In that game Deunsing pitched 7 innings, giving up only one run on three hits.

OF Jason Pridie extended his hit streak to 15 games off of his 3 for 5 performance last night.

Monday's action across the International League shaped out like this...

RF Ben Francisco went 3 for 4, including a two run homer, in the Bisons' 5-2 victory over the Scranton Wilkes/Barre Yankees. RF Jason Cooper also had 3 hits, two of which were doubles. BOX

RF Randy Joyce also went 3 for 4 and drove in 4 runs as the Toledo Mud Hens swept the Indianapolis Indians 6-5. BOX

It took 17 innings to settle things in Louisville last night. The Columbus Clippers scored three times in the top pf the inning to escape with a 5-2 victory. BOX

The Richmond Braves scored five runs over the last two innings to overtake the Durham Bulls, 6-3. Rays star lefty Scott Kazmir, on a rehab assignment with the Bulls, threw five innings, giving up one run on three hits. BOX

The Norfolk Tides scored seven runs in the fifth inning in their 10-5 rout of the Charlotte Knights. BOX

PawSox Down Red Wings 8-6

The Pawtucket Red Sox offense became rejuvenated last night in Rochester, as they pounded out 12 hits in their 8-6 victory over the Red Wings.

Jeff Bailey, Joe Thurston, Chris Carter, Jonathan Van Every, and Gil Velazquez each had two hits for the PawSox. Newcomer Sandy Madera had one hit, a three run homer in the third. He drove in four in the game.

Bailey, Van Every, and Velazquez also drove in runs for Pawtucket. The other scored on a wild pitch.

PawSox starter David Pauley (2-1) pitched five innings, giving up only one run on six hits in picking up the win. He walked one and struck out three.

Edgar Martinez relieved Pauley in the sixth and gave up the other Rochester runs. The big blow came on a Darnell McDonald grand slam in the seventh. Jon Switzer and Lee Gronkiewicz pitched scoreless ball over the last 1 1/3 innings. Gronkiewicz earned his fifth save.

Rochester Starter Kevin Mulevy (2-2) had his worst start of the year, going 4 2/3 innings and giving up 7 earned runs. Casey Daigle surrendered the eighth PawSox run in relief.

LF Jason Pridie went 3 for 5 with three singles for Rochester. McDonald and 1B Randy Ruiz each had two hits.

The two teams play again tonight (6:35pm) at Frontier Field. LHP Michael Tejera (1-2, 4.57) goes for Pawtucket. LHP Brian Duensing (2-3, 2.40) takes the hill for Rochester.

Game 25- PawSox vs. Red Wings, April 28, 2008

The PawSox look to right the ship tonight (6:35pm) as they head to Rochester to begin a three game series with the Red Wings. RHP David Pauley (1-1, 1.17) gets the start for Pawtucket. He'll be opposed by RHP Kevin Mulvey (2-1, 1.16) for the Red Wings.

Pawtucket Red Sox (13-11)

The PawSox enter the game in third place in the IL North, 3 1/2 games out of first place. They have struggled so far on the road, winning only three of ten away from McCoy.

Pauley makes his return to the PawSox rotation after making a spot start in Boston last week for the ailing Josh Beckett. Pauley's last Triple A start came April 15th at Indianapolis. He took the hard luck loss, giving up only one run on four hits over six innings of work in the PawSox' 3-0 defeat.

1B Sandy Madera looks to build upon his 3 for 4 Triple A debut yesterday against Buffalo. He was signed by the Red Sox earlier this month and called up to Pawtucket Saturday after Brandon Moss was promoted to Boston. He is in his 11th professional season, having been a member of the A's Yankees, Rockies, and Orioles organizations.

Rochester Red Wings (12-12)

The Red Wings currently sit in fourth place in the IL North, 4 1/2 games out of first and one game behind the PawSox.

Mulvey makes his fifth start of the season. He has been extremely effective...giving up a total of three earned runs over 20 innings of work.

OF Jason Pridie begins this week with a 14-game hitting streak, the longest in the IL this season. During that streak he has three doubles, four triples, a homer and 11 RBIs. 3B Brian Buscher holds the team lead in batting (.345) and home runs (4).

Former Twins' pitching sensation Francisco Liriano has been optioned back to Rochester. Since being called up to Minnesota, he is 0-3 with a 11.32 ERA.

Game Wraps- April 27, 2008

It was a busy Sunday across the International League. Here's what happened..

SS Paul Janish had a monster day for the Louisville Bats, going 4 for 4, including a grand slam and 6 RBI's as the Bats pounded the Columbus Clippers 13-4. Jay Bruce also homered and drove in three for Louisville. BOX

The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs drop to 3-21, falling to the Rochester Red Wings, 5-1. Rochester got back-to-back homers from 3B Chris Basak and C Eli Whiteside to break open a 1-1 tie in the seventh. BOX

Five Mud Hens collected two hits apiece as Toledo defeated Indianapolis at home, 7-1. BOX

DH Hector Giminez went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs in the Durham Bulls' 11-4 win over the Charlotte Knights. BOX

The Norfolk Tides took a pair from the Richmond Braves, winning the delayed game from Saturday 5-3, then the regularly scheduled affair 8-4. GAME ONE BOX GAME TWO BOX

It was a pair of pitchers' duels in Syracuse as the Chiefs and Yankees split a double header. Scranton Wilkes/Barre took game one 2-1 with Syracuse winning the night cap 2-0. GAME ONE BOX GAME TWO BOX

Bisons Sweep PawSox 4-3

For the second straight game the PawSox could not get generate any consistent offense, falling to the Buffalo Bisons 4-3, losing both games of this brief two game set at Dunn Tire Park.

The PawSox left plenty of opportunities on the field, standing 10 base runners. They also hit into two double plays, including one in the fourth when the PawSox had runners on first and third.

Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell, again serving as the PawSox DH, went 1 for 4, driving in one run on sacrifice fly in the fifth. The other PawSox runs were driven in on a Chris Carter fielder's choice in the second and a Joe Thurston sacrifice fly in the sixth.

The teams were tied going into the bottom of the seventh. With Eric Hull on the mound, Buffalo's Ryan Mulhern led off with single and was sacrificed to second by Jason Tyner. Mulhern advanced to third on a wild pitch by Hull and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Yamid Haad.

The Bisons' other runs came courtesy a Josh Barfield two-run homer in the second and an RBI single by Aaron Herr in the sixth.

The hitting star for the PawSox was 1B Sandy Madera, called up from Portland last night to fill the roster spot left vacant by Brandon Moss' promotion to Boston. Madera went 3 for 4 with two doubles in his PawSox debut.

Hull (1-1, 1.17 ERA) took the loss for Pawtucket. Reid Santos (2-1 5.27 ERA) picked up the win in relief for Buffalo.

PawSox starter Kyle Snyder pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up three runs on only three hits. He struck out two and walked two. Bisons' starter Brian Slocum pitched 5 innings, giving up only one earned run on five hits.

The PawSox will take their 3-7 road record to Rochester tomorrow night (6:35pm) when they open up a series with the Red Wings. David Pauley (1-1) will take the mound for Pawtucket opposed by the Red Wings' Kevin Mulvey (2-1).

Game Wraps, April 26, 2008

Here's what took place on the diamond around the rest of the International League yesterday...

Rain played havoc on two match-ups, forcing the postponement of the game between the Yankees and Chiefs in Syracuse and forcing the suspension of the game in the fourth inning between the Tides and Braves in Richmond. The Braves hold a 1-0 lead. Both contests will be made up as part of a double header today. The Tides and Braves will resume their game in the top of the fourth.

No win streak for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Four Red Wing players had three hits as the Red Wings pounded out 20 in total in their 10-0 whitewash. In contrast the Iron Pigs could muster up only two hits. BOX

The Clippers got an RBI single by Ray Olmedo in the top of the 13th to beat the Louisville Bats 4-3. BOX

The Toledo Mud Hens got a walk-off triple by Jeff Larish in the bottom of the 11th to nip the Indianpolis Indians 7-6. BOX

The Durham Bulls only needed nine innings to beat the Charlotte Knights 3-2. BOX

PawSox Fall to Bisons 4-1

The Pawtucket Red Sox fell 4-1 to the Buffalo Bisons in the first game of a brief two game series last night at Dunn Tire Park.

Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell made his second start for the PawSox and went 1 for 4 with a single. He played third base for the first time since injuring his left thumb. He did make a throwing error in the seventh, one of three miscues for the PawSox in the game.

The PawSox scored their lone run in the top of the seventh off Buffalo starter Jeff Harris on an RBI double by Chad Spann.

Pawtucket had an excellent opportunity to add more runs in the third. George Kottaras led off with a single and advanced to third on a base hit by Lowell. On a Chris Carter grounder to first, Kottaras then got into a rundown between third and the plate. With runners now on second and third and only one out, Keith Ginter's grounder to short resulted in Lowell being thrown out at the plate.

Harris (1-0) then settled down, throwing six innings, giving up five hits, walking one and striking out six for with win.

In his return form the disabled list, PawSox starter Davern Hansack (0-3) was on a strict pitch limit. He only threw 2 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out three in being tagged with the loss.

Jon Switzer gave up a run in his 2 1/3 innings of work. Lincoln Holdzkom surrendered the other Bisons' run in the eighth.

On a positive note, Craig Hansen pitched two more innings of scoreless relief, bringing his scoreless string to 14 1/3 innings this season.

Buffalo SS Danny Sandoval was the only player on either team to have a multiple hit game. He went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI.

The series wraps up this afternoon (1:05pm) with Kyle Snyder (0-0) going for Pawtucket. He will face Buffalo's Brian Slocum (2-1). Lowell is scheduled to be the designated hitter again for the PawSox.

Moss Called Up

Joe McDonald at the ProJo is reporting that PawSox 1B Brandon Moss has been called up to the Red Sox.

It looks like Sean Casey may be placed on the disabled list with a hip strain suffered in last night's game in Tampa.

Not sure what other roster moves the PawSox will make to fill their vacant spot.

Game 23- PawSox vs Bisons, April 26, 2008

The PawSox begin their longest road trip of the season with game one of a two game set tonight (6:05pm) in Buffalo against the Bisons. RHP Devern Hansack (0-2, 13.50) is on the mound for Pawtucket against the Bisons' RHP Jeff Harris (0-0, 3.38)

Here's some prep...

Pawtucket Red Sox (13-9)

The PawSox enter the game winners of four of their last five. They took two of three last week at McCoy when the Bisons were in town.

Mike Lowell will get his second start as part of his rehab assignment with the PawSox. He is expected to play third base. Last night as the designated hitter, Lowell went 1 for 5. He did drive in two runs with a bases loaded single in the second in the PawSox' 6-1 win over the Syracuse Chiefs.

Hansack makes his return to the mound after being on the disabled list since April 12th. He was hit in the right forearm by a batted ball in his start April 11th at Louisville. To make room for Hansack the PawSox have released RHP Dan Kolb.

Hansack was ineffective in his two starts this season, losing both decisions while giving up seven earned runs in only 4 2/3 innings.

Buffalo Bisons (7-16)

The Bisons have lost three straight, and five of six, entering tonight's game. They sit in fifth place in the IL North, nine games out of first.

Harris makes his second start of the season. He has been consistent, not allowing any more than three runs in any of his four previous appearances.

IF Aaron Herr leads the Bisons in most offensive categories, including batting (.289), homers (4), and RBI (15)

Here is what happened across the rest of the International League last night..

The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs snapped their 9-game losing streak, paced by 5 RBIs from Mike Cervenack and Andy Tracy, in beating Rochester 6-2. BOX

Scranton Wilkes/Barre now has a two game lead in the IL North after edging the Buffalo Bisons 2-1. BOX

Brent Lillibridge had three hits and drove in three and Mike Hampton had a successful rehab start as the Richmond Braves came from behind to beat the Norfolk Tides 8-6. BOX

The Charlotte Knights scored five runs over two innings, and that was enough to beat the Durham Bulls 5-2. BOX

Andrew McCutchen belted a homer and drove in three as the Indianapolis Indians topped the Louisville Bats 4-1. BOX

The Toledo Mud Hens scored four runs in the eighth to take the lead and defeat the Columbus Clippers 8-5. BOX

Lowell Helps PawSox Beat the Chiefs 6-1

PAWTUCKET- Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell began his rehab assignment with the PawSox by driving in two runs as Pawtucket beat the Syracuse Chiefs, 6-1, in the finale of a three game series Friday night at McCoy.

As the PawSox DH in his first action since being placed on the disabled list with a sore left thumb, Lowell finished the game going 1 for 5. He drove in two runs on a bases loaded single in the second. He had a broken bat pop-up to short in the first, lined out to center in the fifth, fouled out to third in the sixth, a popped out to second in the eighth.

After his outing Lowell said his thumb felt fine.

“I was actually happy,” said Lowell, “Overall I can’t think of anything negative, so that’s good.”

“How exciting was that when he came up with the bases loaded” said PawSox Manager Ron Johnson, “I got a guy with 120 RBIs coming up with the bases loaded. He didn’t let us down.”

“He’s such a great example for everybody. This guy’s the ultimate professional.”

Lowell is slated to play third base Saturday night when the PawSox open a three game series in Buffalo.

The PawSox got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring four times. Chris Carter and Keith Ginter led off with singles. After Jeff Bailey popped up to first, Gil Velazquez blooped what appeared to be a single to right. However it turned into a fielder’s choice as Ginter was forced at second. Carter did score on the play.

Velasquez then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Jonathan Van Every walked, Joe Thurston singled to left to drive in Velazquez.. George Kottaras walked to load the bases. Lowell followed by drilling a 3-1 pitch to center to score Van Every and Thurston. Kottaras was thrown out at third to end the inning.

Van Every gave the PawSox a 5-0 with a solo homer to left in the bottom of the fourth.

The PawSox offense added to their lead in the fifth. With one out, Brandon Moss singled off Chiefs’ pitcher Mike MacDonald. He then stole second and scored on a double by Carter.

Chris Smith (1-2) earned his first win of the season for Pawtucket, pitching six scoreless innings and giving up only one hit. His only blemish came in the fifth inning. He gave up a single to C Curtis Thigpen and walked 1B Chris Cannon to start the frame. He then settled down, getting a pair of fly outs and a ground out to end the threat. His ERA dropped to 1.71.

“The innings were going by so quick, it was a matter of coming in and I had to put my helmet on and get back out to third”, Johnson said of Smith’s efficiency. “He was really locked in. A very impressive performance.”

The Chiefs scored their only run in the eighth off PawSox reliever Edgar Martinez. LF Eric Nielsen tripled to right and scored on a ground out by Pedro Lopez. The PawSox staff limited Syracuse to only two hits.

“Any time you get two guys to give up only two hits against Syracuse, that’s pretty good” said Johnson.

Syracuse starter Kane Davis had a rough outing, lasting only three innings, giving up four runs and taking the loss.

POST-GAME NOTES

- The Chiefs and PawSox have played 647 since 1973. Amazingly, the PawSox hold a slim 329-318 advantage over the Chiefs.

- The PawSox will now begin their longest road trip of the season. The 9 game trip will be played entirely in the State of New York with two games in Buffalo, three in Rochester, and four in Syracuse. The PawSox are back at McCoy on Monday, May 5th.

- RHP Davern Hansack is slated to come off the DL tomorrow and pitch for the PawSox in their opener in Buffalo.

The PawSox took the rubber game of their three game series with the Syracuse Chiefs tonight 6-1 at McCoy.

Mike Lowell, making his first appearance since being placed on the DL, went 1 for 5, driving in two runs with a bases loaded single in the second.

PawSox Extend Their Lead to 6-0 After Six Innings

The PawSox have upped their lead, to 6-0, over the Syracuse Chiefs after six innings at McCoy. The added a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Chris Carter.

Mike Lowell, on a rehab assignment from Boston, is 1 for 4 with two RBI. He lined to center in the fifth and fouled out to third in the sixth. He drove in his runs on a bases loaded single in the second.

Starter Chris Smith continues his mastery on the mound. He pitched six scoreless innings, giving up only one hit. Edgar Martinez is on the mound to start the seventh.

PawSox On Top 5-0 After Four

The PawSox still lead the Syracuse Chiefs, 5-0, after four innings at McCoy. They scored four runs in the bottom of the second, capped by a two-run single by the re-habbing Mike Lowell. Jonathan Van Every added another run in the fourth on a solo homer to left.

PawSox starter Chris Smith is having another solid outing, not having given up a hit through four. He has walked two and struck out two.

Lowell 1 for 2, 2 RBI as PawSox lead 4-0 after Two

The PawSox lead the Syracuse Chiefs, 4-0 after two innings at McCoy. The PawSox scored their runs in the bottom of the second on a fielder's choice by SS Gil Velazquez and a single by 2B Joe Thurston.

Sox 3B Mike Lowell (above), in the line-up at DH for the PawSox and batting third, came up with the bases loaded in the second and lined a 3-1 pitch to center to drive in two runs. In his first at bat he hit a broken bat pop-up to shortstop Jorge Velandia.

Game 22- Chiefs vs. PawSox, April 25, 2008

There's quite a bit of anticipation in the air as the PawSox wrap-up their home stand with the finale tonight (7:05pm) of a three game set with the Syracuse Chiefs. Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell is expected to be in the line-up as the DH as the PawSox look to take the rubber game of the series. RHP Kane Davis (2-1, 2.78) throws for the Chiefs against RHP Chris Smith (0-2, 2.40) for Pawtucket.

The Chiefs have won nine of ten and remain one game behind Scranton Wilkes/Barre in the IL North.

Davis is making his 5th start of the season and is coming off arguably his best performance of the year in the Chiefs' 2-1 win over Lehigh Valley on April 20th. Over 8 innings he gave up only one run on five hits with one walk.

Syracuse has gotten a strong performance out of its bullpen this season. The relief corps has only allowed three of 19 inherited runners to score all season.

The Chiefs have thrived when they have the lead. They are 9-0 when leading after 6 innings, 11-0 when leading after 7 innings, and 13-0 when leading after 8 innings. Conversely they 0-2, 0-3, and 0-2 when trailing after the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings respectively.

Lowell spoke to reporters before the game and said he is ready to get back to play. His left thumb is wrapped and will probably stay so for some time. He will DH tonight, play third in the PawSox first game in Buffalo tomorrow, then DH again Sunday in Buffalo.

Other roster moves, Joe Thurston returns to the PawSox after a short stint in Boston. RP Bryan Corey was called back up to Boston today.

RP Craig Hansen has also been added back to the PawSox roster. He pitched two innings Wednesday night in a losing effort for Boston. He enters tonight's game on a scoreless string that has lasted 12 1/3 innings.

Smith has pitched well in three starts but has yet to earn a win. He has been the victim of a lack of run support. The PawSox have scored a total of 6 runs in his three outings. In his last outing, a 7-0 loss to Buffalo, Smith gave up only 2 runs on 5 hits over 5 1/3 innings.
