Johnson & Johnson Do in PawSox, 10-6
Durham's Dan and Elliot Johnson each homered and drove in three runs as the Bulls out scored the PawSox 10-6 last night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Dan Johnson (3 for 4) hit his two-run homer off PawSox starter Clay Buchholz in the third. Elliot Johnson (no relation, 2 for 3) also hit a two-run shot, off reliever and game loser Edgar Martinez (1-1). It came in the bottom of the seventh when the Bulls scored three times to break open a 5-5 tie.
Twice the PawSox fell behind only to come back and tie the score. But both times the Bulls had answers of their own.
Chris Carter continues his hot streak at the plate for Pawtucket. He went 2 for 3, with a homer and 2 RBIs. He now has a ten game hitting streak.
Sean Danielson found himself in the lead-off spot in place of Jeff Bailey, who was called up to Boston earlier in the day. Danielson took advantage of the opportunity, banging out three hits and driving in a run. Brandon Moss also belted a solo homer for the PawSox. Keith Ginter drove in a PawSox run with a sacrifice fly.
Jed Lowrie made his return to the PawSox line-up, batting third and playing shortstop. He finished his day 1 for 4 with a triple and a run scored.
Justin Ruggiano and Joel Guzman each had two hits and drove in a run for the Bulls. The other Durham RBI's came courtesy of Fernando Perez and Reid Brigniac.
Buchholz was shaky in his second rehab start with the Pawtucket. He threw 76 pitches over four innings. He gave up three runs on two hits, including a homer. More importantly it appeared his command was off, walking four and throwing a wild pitch. He also struck out five.
Durham starter Chris Mason pitched well but did not earn a decision. He pitched seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Kurt Birkins (1-1) picked-up the win in relief.
Before the game the PawSox added OF Bobby Kielty back to their roster. The member of the Red Sox 2007 championship squad had been sidelined since April 19th with a left hand injury, which eventually required surgery. Kietly had been in rehab at Single A Lancaster where he went 2 for 8 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI's in three games.
Game two of the four game series with the Bulls is tonight (7:05 pm) with RHP David Pauley (6-2, 3.09) starting for Pawtucket against RHP Jeff Niemann (2-1, 1.71) for Durham.

The PawSox will be without Jeff Bailey, whose contract was purchsed by the Red Sox after Daisuke Matsuzaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a slight shoulder strain.

Masterson, Bailey Lead PawSox over Yankees, 5-2
The lanky right hander (1-0) had command of all his pitches, throwing six complete innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out four and walked one. He also hit a batter. The two runs off Masterson came on a wild pitch to score Justin Christian in the third and a two out error by Joe Thurston, plating Jason Lane, in the fourth.
“It didn’t take more than an inning or so to see the attraction” said PawSox Manager Ron Johnson of his young starter, “I don’t think we could have scripted this any better for his first Triple A outing.”
“I just wanted to do what I usually do…let my sinker work, get ground balls and let the great infielders I have field the balls” said Masterson. “I pretty much stuck to that game plan and got some ground balls.”
Masterson’s spot in the PawSox’ rotation was moved up two days in anticipation that he may be needed to make a spot start in Boston on Tuesday if Daisuke Matsuzaka is forced to miss his next turn due to shoulder stiffness.
I’m always ready to help out the team” Masterson said, “I’m just going to keep working and get ready for the next start."
Bailey hit two homers in the game, a two-run shot in the third and a solo homer in the eighth, giving him 16 for the year. His two-homer game was the third during this 8-game home stand. Before his blast in the third Bailey had been hitless in his last ten at bats.
“The last couple of games I wasn’t in a good position to hit” said Bailey . “I got my legs more involved tonight and kept my head still and that’s the key.”
Bailey, who has 13 home runs in the month of May, was not scheduled to be in the line-up but was inserted late as the DH.
“I was excited about getting the night off. I thought I needed the game off” said Bailey, “Whenever that happens and they throw guys in there late they have a good game.”
The PawSox scored in the bottom of the first on Chris Carter’s eighth homer of the season. With the hit Carter has now hit in nine straight games. Their fifth run also came in the eighth on an RBI single by Brandon Moss.
Scranton starter Dan McCutchen (0-2) was ejected with one out in the bottom of the fifth as he threw two consecutive pitches behind Bailey, no doubt in retaliation to Bailey’s homer in the third. Yankee Manager Dave Miley was also ejected for arguing with plate umpire Brian Kennedy.
Hunter Jones came in to relieve Masterson and pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. Chris Smith got the final two Yankee outs to secure his fifth save.
The PawSox now embark on an 8-game road trip beginning with the first of four games tomorrow night (7:05 pm) in Durham against the Bulls. Clay Buchholz (0-0, 2.25 ERA) will make his second PawSox start against Chris Mason (2-5, 4.71 ERA) for the Bulls.
NOTES: With the win the PawSox have the best home record in the IL at 21-9. That ties the best home record for the PawSox after 30 games in franchise history. Pawtucket was also 21-9 in the 1977 season. The PawSox will have 16 home games in June opposed to 14 on the road.
PawSox Earn Split 5-2
The PawSox split their four game set with the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees tonight with a 5-2 win before 5, 160 fans at McCoy.
Justin Masterson earned the win in his PawSox debut. Jeff Bailey hit two homers and drove in three. Chris Carter also homered for Pawtucket.

PawSox Still On Top 3-2 After Six Innings
It's the status quo in terms of the score after six innings tonight at McCoy. The PawSox still lead the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees 3-2.
The only news since our last update came in the bottom of the fifth when Scranton starter Dan McCutchen was ejected by home plate umpire Brian Kennedy after throwing two consecutive pitches behind Jeff Bailey, who homered off him in the third. Yankee Manager Dave Miley was also ejected arguing Kennedy's call.
Justin Masterson's day is complete. He is in line for the win...going six innings giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out four, walked one, and hit a batter. He threw exactly 90 pitches, 59 for strikes.
PawSox Still Lead Yankees, 3-2 After Four
The PawSox have upped their lead to 3-2 over the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees after four innings at McCoy.

What a difference two games make. Two days ago the PawSox were tied with the Yankees for first place in the IL North Division. Following back-to-back losses the PawSox find themselves in third place, two games out of first and 1/2 game behind Syracuse for second place.
Justin Masterson makes his PawSox debut tonight. He was slated to start Saturday in Durham but was moved up with the speculation he may be needed to pitch for the Red Sox on Tuesday if Daisuke Matsuzaka is unable to make his next start with shoulder stiffness.
PawSox Manager Ron Johnson is looking forward to Masterson's debut.
"I saw two innings in the first two days of Major League Spring Training. The only other times I’ve seen him was on TV. It should be exciting." said Johnson.
Masterson has been with the team for about a week and has blended in extremely well.
"He’s probably the nicest guy I’ve ever met. He makes you feel better hanging out with him," said Johnson. "When these guys go up there to the big league club, it’s there responsibility to blend in to be part of that culture. When you’ve got a guy that understands things..its real good."
Masterson has made two appearances with Boston this season. In those games he was 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA. In those games he struck out nine and walked seven. He has also had eight starts with Double A Portland. In those starts Masterson was 1-3 with a 4.23 ERA.
Elsewhere with the pitching staff Johnson said it's important for the PawSox bullpen to not get too discouraged over their performance the last two games,
"We’re playing the best team in the league. They’ve had they’re way with us" Johnson said, "When they have two or three days when they struggle its all about how they rebound."
On the injury front Johnson said Jed Lowrie took batting practice from both sides of the plate today and looks ready to rejoin the PawSox line-up in the next day or so. Reliever Lee Gronkiewicz, who has been sidelined since May 1st, has had another MRI on his ailing right elbow. His status is still up in the air.
Jeff Bailey was slated to have the day off but was a last minute addition to the line-up at DH. He has been in a rut as of late, going hitless in his last nine at bats.
Chris Carter enters the game with a 8 game hitting streak, over which he is hitting .531 with 4 homers and 7 RBI. He now leads the team with a .318 batting average.
Check back as I will be providing periodic updates every few innings.

Yankees Edge PawSox in Slugfest, 9-8
PAWTUCKET- The PawSox’ surrendered their lead atop the IL North Division...but not without a fight. The Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees broke out the bats early, and hung on to earn a 9-8 win over Pawtucket tonight at McCoy. With the loss the PawSox dropped back to second place in the IL North Division, one game behind SWB.
Down at one point 8-0, the PawSox came back to make it a game, but their early deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
“There’s good and there’s bad” said PawSox skipper Ron Johnson, “The bad part was we gave up too many runs. The good part was how we battled back. We spotted them too many runs”
PawSox starter Kyle Snyder made his first start since coming off the disabled list with a right groin strain. His return was a memorable one, but not in a good way. He lasted only 1 2/3 innings in taking the loss, giving up five runs on three hits. He walked three, struck out one, and hit two batters. He threw 54 pitches, only 26 for strikes.

As bad as the Yankees have been of late, the PawSox have been on fire. They have won 15 of their last 19 and are tied for the IL North lead. With a win the PawSox would find themselves alone atop the division for the first time since the first week of the season (April 10th). So far in 5 games against SWB this season the PawSox are 4-1.
With yesterday's 11-5 win the PawSox have now scored back-to-back in double digits for the first time this year and the first time since July of 2005.
Snyder makes his first start since being placed on the disabled list with a right groin strain. He left his last start with the injury after completing only 3 innings. His last win came May 7th against Indianapolis (12-7 PawSox victory). Manager Ron Johnson says Snyder will be limited to 60-65 pitches in his return.
The PawSox pitching staff is now tops in the International League. Their team ERA of 3.28 is .06 better than the Yankees. Offensively the PawSox are tied for the IL lead in team batting average at .270.
Chris Carter enters the game with a 6 game hitting streak where he has batted .500 over that stretch with 3 homers and 6 RBIs.
It is currently raining at McCoy and the tarp is on the field. Unsure if the game will start on time. Either way, expect periodic updates throughout the night.

PawSox' Change in Fortune Not By Chance
PAWTUCKET- What a difference a year makes. It may sound cliché, but when it comes to the Pawtucket Red Sox 2008 season so far, the change in seasons has come with a change in fortunes.
“The biggest thing I’m pleased with with this club is that we’ve had 9 people called up. We’ve had injuries,” said Johnson, “There’s been a lot of different cast of characters.”
